In medical school, when I shared my dream, I was told that, “You will NEVER be an orthopaedic surgeon as a little black girl from a little black school.”
Well, the first time I laid eyes on Dr. Claudia Thomas, the first African-American woman to become an a board-certified Orthopaedic Surgeon in the US, I knew I could do it.
In my mind, she looked just like me, which underscores the power of our presence, the power of YOUR presence in the lives of those coming behind you.
Dr. Thomas was one of my first mentors in Orthopaedics and remains so to this day. Her strength, courage and achievements continue to inspire me, and I thank God for her sacrifice and willingness to mentor me.
I mentor, because I’ve been mentored in mighty ways by mighty people…
…AND, thanks to the person back in the day for telling me what I could not do so that I could show you that I could…
…and I did!
